'deserves death! i daresay he does. many that live deserve death. and some die that deserve life. can you give that to them? then be not too eager to deal out death in the name of justice, fearing for your own safety. even the wise cannot see all ends.' -j.r.r. tolkien

so far, i'm about half way through the two towers, which is considerably slow if you know me. i could probably read through all three books in a couple of sittings, but i decided to read slowly-- just a few pages when time allows. and i don't know if it's because i'm reading it slower, but the entire story and all its characters are incredibly fascinating. there's so much about the wise, the hobbits, gollum, and sauron that i find interesting. interesting enough to stick post-it notes throughout the books, and revisit from time to time. i almost miss those days of english discussions-- hours upon hours analyzing stories.

here's a particular exchange between gandalf and pippin that i'll leave you with: ♥
''i wish i had known all this before,' said pippin. 'i had no notion of what i was doing.'
'oh yes, you had,' said gandalf. 'you knew you were behaving wrongly and foolishly; and you told yourself so, though you did not listen.''
